Chief Scientific Adviser for Rural Affairs and Environment to the Scottish Government

Professor Maggie Gill has been Chief Scientific Adviser for Rural Affairs and Environment to the Scottish Executive (now Scottish Government) since February 2006, with 20% of her time as Professor of Integrated Land Use in the College of Physical Sciences in the University of Aberdeen.

Her career has included both research and research management starting with sheep, beef and then dairy cattle nutrition at the Grassland Research Institute in south-east England, where her research included collaboration with scientists in Australasia, North America. 

She moved from there to the Natural Resources Institute, an Executive Agency of the Overseas Development Administration (now the Department for International Development), managing dairy nutrition projects in Bolivia, India and Kenya.

Her research extended to the interface between agriculture and the environment, leading to the development of a Livestock and Environment ‘toolbox’ of research results for FAO.

Maggie's last post prior to joining the Scottish Executive was as Chief Executive and Director of Research at the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute in Aberdeen.
